Why We’re Bringing Periodontal Microsurgery to Raleigh

At NC Implants & Periodontics, we believe that exceptional patient care means never settling for the status quo. Dentistry is constantly evolving, and as Raleigh’s premier destination for periodontal health, we are always looking for ways to make your treatment faster, more comfortable, and more successful.

That is why we are incredibly excited to announce our next big leap in patient care: periodontal microsurgery is coming soon to our practice!

We will be launching this service starting this month, and we can’t wait to share what this means for our patients. Here’s everything you need to know about periodontal microsurgery, and why it’s revolutionizing the way we treat gum disease and place dental implants.

What is Periodontal Microsurgery?

Historically, conventional gum surgery has been performed macroscopically—meaning it relies solely on the surgeon’s naked eye or standard magnification loupes. While this is highly effective, the traditional tools used (such as standard scalpels and needles) are relatively large, which can lead to larger incisions and a longer recovery period.

Periodontal microsurgery changes everything. By utilizing state-of-the-art dental operating microscopes, we can magnify the surgical field up to 20 times its normal size. This allows Dr. Thiago Morelli and our team to see cellular-level details, intricate blood vessels, and micro-structures that are completely invisible to the naked eye. To match this incredible visual precision, we use specialized, ultra-fine micro-instruments borrowed from the medical fields of ophthalmology and neurosurgery.

The Pros: Why Microsurgery is a Game-Changer

When you combine unmatched visualization with miniature instruments, the benefits for the patient are extraordinary. Here is why periodontal microsurgery is setting a new standard in dental care:

  • Minimally Invasive: In conventional surgery, a standard scalpel blade is about 12mm wide. In microsurgery, we use precision blades that are roughly 3 mm wide. This allows us to make incredibly precise, conservative incisions that preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.
  • Ultra-Fine Sutures: The needles and suture threads used in microsurgery are a fraction of the size of traditional stitches. In fact, the suture material is often as thin as a single strand of human hair! Because the threads are so fine, they glide through the tissue seamlessly, creating zero tension and leaving virtually no scarring.
  • Rapid, Comfortable Healing: Less tissue trauma during the procedure directly translates to an easier, smoother recovery experience. Because the incisions are tiny and the wound closure is perfectly aligned, patients experience significantly less postoperative swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. Many patients find they need little-to-no pain medication during their recovery.
  • Superior Aesthetic Results: When it comes to your smile, the details matter. Because microsurgery allows for such gentle handling of the gums, it is perfect for cosmetic procedures like gum grafting or contouring around front teeth. The precision prevents tissue shrinkage and ensures a natural, symmetrical, and beautiful gumline.
  • Optimized Implant Success: When placing dental implants, preserving bone and soft tissue is critical. Microsurgical techniques allow us to prepare the implant site with pinpoint accuracy, leading to better tissue integration and long-term stability for your new teeth.
